Ablation Study

An experiment where components of an AI system are systematically removed or disabled, one at a time, to determine how much each contributes to overall performance. The term "ablation", which loosely means to remove or erode, is most commonly used in neuroscience and biology when describing the removal of biological components. In AI, it helps researchers identify which parts of a model or pipeline are actually doing the useful work.
