A period of reduced funding, interest, and progress in AI research, typically following a wave of overhyped expectations that the technology failed to meet. There have been two major AI winters, roughly 1974–1980 and 1987–1993, and the term serves as a reminder that hype cycles and genuine progress do not always move together.
