AI GLOSSARY

Contestability

Safety, Alignment & Ethics

The ability of individuals affected by an AI decision to challenge that decision and have it reviewed or overturned. Contestability is an important safeguard in automated decision-making, requiring both technical mechanisms for appealing decisions and organizational processes for handling those appeals fairly. People should not be subject to consequential AI decisions with no meaningful recourse.
