Dual Use

The potential for an AI capability or system to be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes. Many powerful AI capabilities, such as protein structure prediction, language generation, or autonomous decision-making, have legitimate applications but could also be misused. Dual use is a central consideration in decisions about what AI capabilities to develop, release, and how to govern access to them.
