AI GLOSSARY

Explainability

Safety, Alignment & Ethics

The degree to which the reasoning behind an AI system's outputs can be communicated in terms understandable to users, affected individuals, or regulators. Explainability is distinct from interpretability: an interpretable model is transparent by design, while an explainable model may be a black box internally but provides post-hoc explanations of its decisions. Both matter for trust, accountability, and regulatory compliance.
