AI GLOSSARY

Fairness (AI)

Safety, Alignment & Ethics

The property of an AI system that treats individuals and groups equitably, without producing systematically biased or discriminatory outcomes. Fairness in AI is technically complex because there are multiple competing mathematical definitions, including demographic parity, equalized odds, and individual fairness, and it is often mathematically impossible to satisfy all of them simultaneously. Choosing the right fairness criterion requires understanding the values and tradeoffs relevant to a specific application.
See also: demographic parity, equalized odds, disparate impact.
